The Grivel G10 Evo crampons are classic 10 point crampons that are best suited to winter hill walking and glacier crossings, whether worn with traditional mountaineering boots, or with the correct binding ski boots.
As a general rule 10 points are best for walking, 12 for general mountaineering and 14 points for technical climbing. So why choose a 10 point crampon?
For less technical ground 10 spikes is enough, this keeps the weight down and you have less spikes to catch, including on your other leg. The spikes themselves are not too long, so you are more stable when walking. The front points have a horizontal orientation providing better purchase on snow and soft ice.
These crampons are flexible so move with your boot at lot more, so it is noticeably more comfortable when walking compared to a more rigid crampon. The proactive anti-balling plate helps keeps snow buildup to a minimum, by popping out the snow whilst you walk.
The webbing and bindings on the G10 EVO have been improved over the previous generation, now using 12mm webbing compared to 14mm. The buckle has been improved and is now easier to tighten and loosen, the extra webbing now fastens in towards the boot and wraps around the front of the ankle and can be tucked into the back. The step-in bindings have also been improved and simplified with a clip in height adjuster rather than the old dial. These step-in bindings are now lighter, stronger and easier to adjust.
The Grivel G10 is a crampon with a long history, and with a few modern adjustments the G10 EVO is poised to become a classic once more. For those looking for winter hill walking or for glacier crossings, we highly recommend.
